CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Illinois dropped the second game of the three-game opening-weekend series against Kansas on Saturday, 12-1. Sophomore RHP Jack Wenninger earned his first career start on the mound for the Illini, going 1.1 innings. Junior catcher Jacob Campbell hit the first homerun of the season for the Orange and Blue, a solo shot to left field to cut into the deficit in the home half of the fourth inning.
Freshman RHP Crayton Burnett made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen on Saturday, entering the game in the seventh inning. The St. Joseph native went 3.0 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four of the 12 batters he faced.
Illinois wraps up the three-game series Sunday at Whataburger Field against the Jayhawks beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Sophomore LHP Payton Hutchings will get the nod for the Illini in the final game of the weekend series.
