URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois women's tennis team secured Braggin' Rights with an impressive performance on Sunday (February 13) in a 4-0 sweep of Missouri in Atkins Tennis Center.
The Illini improve to 6-3 on the season, including a standout 5-0 mark in home matches.
"I was really pleased and really proud of their performance," said head coach Evan Clark. "We kind of circle this one as a match that was going to be really, really tough. We were 5-3 heading into this match and had played some good teams close and [have been] trying to go over the hump against good teams. I think Mizzou is a really good team, so I was really pleased with how we handled everything."
The Illini were dominant in doubles as sophomore Kate Duong and freshman Megan Heuser cruised to a 6-1 win on court one, before the junior duo of Ashley Yeah and Josie Frazier finished things off with a 6-3 win on court two.
UI won five of six opening sets to take control in singles, before Heuser earned the first solo win with a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Romary Cardenas on court four.
Senior Shivani Ingle and Yeah then struck back-to-back wins less than 30 seconds apart to send the Illini to victory as ingle posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Valentina Vazquez on court six and Yeah registered a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Gabriela Martinez at No. 2 singles.
