MOBILE, Ala. – The Illinois men's golf team, rated No. 20 nationally by Golfstat, officially opens the spring season this week, traveling to the Gulf Coast to compete in the 2022 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The two-day event, hosted by the University of South Alabama, will be played Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 14-15.
THE SETTING
The Mobile Bay Intercollegiate is held at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. The course - part of Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail - has been rated by Golf World Magazine as one of the "Top 50 Public Courses." It features a Par-72 layout that stretches 7,212 yards.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The 54-hole tournament will be a five-count-four format played over two days, with 36 holes on tap for Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday. Monday will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. Tuesday's final round begins at 8 a.m. with golfers teeing off on Holes 1 and 10.
THE FIELD
The field includes 14 programs vying for the title, highlighted by three programs rated inside the top 50 by Golfstat. The No. 20 Illini are joined by No. 28 Kent State, and No. 49 UAB. Six other teams in the field are rated in the top 100: Florida State (55), Memphis (68), Southern Miss (77), Kansas State (81), Toledo (85) and South Alabama (95). The rest of the field includes Louisiana (103), Texas State (118), Miami (OH) (121), Davison (124), and Western Kentucky (192).

ILLINI AT THE MOBILE BAY INTERCOLLEGIATE
The Illini have previously competed in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate four times, most recently securing the team title with a tournament-record score of 827 (-37) at the 2021 event after a runner-up team finish in 2020. Former Illini Michael Feagles set the individual tournament record last year with a 54-hole total of 200 (-16) to capture medalist honors.
Current members of the Illini roster have combined to play seven rounds in the event over the last two years entering Monday. Jerry Ji and Adrien Dumont de Chassart are each playing in the event for a third consecutive year. Ji finished second in 2021 and tied for 15th in 2020. Dumont de Chassart tied for 9th in 2021 after grabbing a share of 19th in 2020. Senior Tommy Kuhl posted his career-best score (7-under 209) and career-best finish (T3rd) in his first appearance in the event last season. Nico Lang and Piercen Hunt each played in the tournament as individual competitors last year, finishing tied for 44th and tied for 67th, respectively.
The Illini also played in the tournament in back-to-back seasons in 2012 and 2013, finishing fourth and third, respectively.

The Illini return to the course on Feb. 27 – March 1 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, hosted by UNLV at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev.
