MADISON, Wis. – The Illinois Fighting Illini dropped Friday night's dual against No. 9 Wisconsin at the UW Field house, 32-10. Lucas Byrd improved to 17-1 on the season with a 16-5 major decision at 133-pounds, while DJ Shannon earned his first pin (4:55) in the 174-pound bout.
The dual began at 133-pounds as Lucas Byrd earned one of two match wins for the Illini, allowing Illinois to jump out to a 4-0 lead with his third major decision of the season. Dylan Duncan lost the exciting 141-pound match in the first overtime, 8-6, as the Orange and Blue held a 4-3 lead through the first two bouts of the evening.
Christian Kanzler lost by fall (0:42) to Wisconsin's Austin Gomez as the Badgers took their first lead of the dual, 9-4. Joe Roberts and Danny Braunagel lost by decision and major decision at 157 and 165-pounds, respectively. DJ Shannon earned his first pin (4:55) of the season over Wisconsin's Andrew McNally, cutting the Illini deficit to 16-10 heading into the final four matches of the night.
In the 184-pound bout, Zac Braunagel lost by decision, 8-2. Matt Wroblewski and Luke Luffman each dropped their matches by major decision, securing a win for the Badgers with one match to go. Dane Durlacher earned his first career start at 125-pounds, but lost by fall (3:31).
