BATON ROUGE, La. – The Fighting Illini softball team fell to the 14th-ranked LSU Tigers 4-2 Friday evening at Tiger Park.
Freshman RHP Lauren Wiles made her first career start in an Illini uniform, allowing just one earned run and four hits while striking out five Tigers. Juniors Delaney Rummell and Kelly Ryono added RBIs for the Illini, while the Illini as a team outhit LSU 6-to-4.
Wiles opened the game with two strikeouts in the first two innings before LSU plated three in the bottom of the third following an Illini error. Illinois responded with a run of their own after Ryono knocked in Bella Loya on a single.
Wiles got back into her groove in the circle with two scoreless frames before Illinois trimmed the deficit to one on an RBI single from Rummell in the top of the sixth. LSU added another run on a wild pitch, and Illinois was unable to start a rally, falling 4-2 in the second game of opening day.
