Illinois Swimmers Notch Nine More School Top-10 Times

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team finished up day two at the Iowa Invitational with nine more top-10 times in school history. Junior Cara Bognar was the lone champion on day two for the Illini in the 400 IM. She swam the third fastest time in school history with a 4:16.86.

In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Sydney Stoll is now third (54.58), senior Athena Salafatinos fourth (54.5) and sophomore Suvana Baskar is eighth (55.43). Senior Kaleigh Haworth is fourth in the Illini record book for the 100 breast stroke (1:02.57)

Freshman Sara Jass recorded two top-10 times. First in the 400 IM (4:19.65), which places her sixth. Next, she swam a 1:03.1 in the 100 breaststroke which slots her in at 10th.

The 200 medley relay team of senior Isabelle Guerra (22.49), sophomore Logan Kuehne (24.47), Athena Salafatinos (25.49), and Kaleigh Haworth (28.5) now hold the fifth fastest time with a 1:40.95. Junior Sophia Burwitz swam the ninth fastest 100 butterfly (55.43).

The final day begins Saturday, Dec. 3 with the prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. Illinois currently sits at third with 491 points, trailing Nebraska (635.5) and Rutgers (495.5). Iowa sits at fourth with 440.5 points.

BETWEEN THE LANES

Plenty of other Illini swam more personal-best marks on day two. In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Paloma Canos-Cervera (55.46), sophomore Logan Kuehne (56.54), freshman Alexis Wendel (55.8) and Salafatinos (55) all topped their personal marks. Junior Meghan Niziolek swam her best in the 200 freestyle, alongside fellow junior Lauren Beard (1:53.45). Beard didn't stop there, she topped her personal mark in the 100 backstroke as well.

Haworth swam a new personal-best in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.57). Sophomore Jane Umhofer performed her best in the 400 IM final (4:29.31). Canos-Cervera and Burwitz topped personal marks as well in the 200 freestyle, 1:53 and 1:53.64, respectively. Junior Anna Kurzydlo slotted herself in between them with a 1:53.64, also her best.

Senior Mariclaire Lynch didn't want to miss out on the personal bests, so she swam her best 100 breaststroke (1:03.89). In the 100 backstroke Wendel (57.8) and junior Paige Koscielski (59.16) touched their best.

ON THE BOARDS

Junior Taylor Michael qualified for diving zones on the three-meter when she scored a personal-best 283.6, she placed ninth. Freshman Abby Manos also scored a personal-best on the three-meter boards (252.9). Sophomore Hannah Hong dove a 214.25, another personal-best for the Illini divers.
