CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illini family has lost one of its most decorated champions with the passing of former Fighting Illini wrestler Jon Llewellyn. Jon passed on October 12 surrounded by his family at age 53 after battling dementia for many years.
Jon competed for the Fighting Illini wrestling program from 1988-91. In that time, he became a three-time All-American, three-time Big Ten Champion and 1991 NCAA Heavyweight Champion. He compiled a record of 106-22-3 during his tenure. After his senior year he was an Olympic Trials qualifier.
After his wrestling days, Llewellyn became a structural engineer and devoted his life to his family. He gave back to his community with his time in the Perrysburg wrestling program.
