August 26, 2021 | Soccer
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini soccer team fell to #2 North Carolina 1-5 Thursday night in the home opener and grand opening of Demirjian Park.
Redshirt senior Hope Breslin scored the lone Illini goal four minutes into the game. After the UNC goalkeeper sent a pass toward midfield deep in her box, Breslin stole the pass and lofted a shot above the Tar Heel keeper, finding the back of the net to put the Illini up 1-0 early.
North Carolina then scored five unanswered goals (three in the first, two in the second) to leave Urbana with the victory.
Illinois celebrated the grand opening of Demirjian Park with a pregame ceremony honoring the Demirjian family. Over 25 Illinois soccer alumni were also in attendance and were honored at halftime of the match.
The Orange and Blue set their sights on Butler to celebrate Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM CT on Sunday, Aug. 29, and will broadcast on B1G+.
