FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Two-time NCAA Still Rings Champion, four-time B1G Still Rings champion, and former Illini great Alex Diab has qualified for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and has been named a member of the senior national team.
Diab scored a 14.950 on still rings last night in day one of the 2021 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. His score would have placed him in the top three at the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, which automatically qualified him for the national team and Olympic Team Trials.
"I'm so proud of Alex. Â He has worked so hard for this opportunity for so long. He's proved he can be one of the best in the world on rings!" head coach Justin Spring said.
Diab currently sits atop the still rings standings at this year's U.S. Gymnastics Championships and will compete for his second-straight U.S. Still Rings championship on Saturday, June 5 at 7 PM CT. He will then set his eyes on training for Olympic Team Trials June 24-27 in St. Louis, Mo., where he hopes to gain a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for Tokyo 2020.
