EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Olivia Howell represented the Illinois track and field team in the final race of the outdoor season with a tenth place finish Saturday at Hayward Field. The women's 1500 m final featured twelve qualifying runners from Thursday's preliminary races, and is the last event featuring an Illini athlete for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships.
Howell finished tenth overall in a time of 4:15.56, good enough to earn Second Team All-American Honors for the Solon, Ohio native. Her decorated season comes to an end following breaking the program record in the 1500 m (4:09.71) and winning the 1500 m Big Ten title to go along with another Big Ten event title in the indoor mile earlier this year.
The All-American honor marks the first time a female Illini athlete has received this accolade since 2017 when Kandie Bloch-Jones (Second Team) and Pedrya Seymour (First Team) were each named All-Americans.
Although academically a sophomore, Howell will maintain three seasons of eligibility for outdoor track moving forward due to the cancellation of last year's season with COVID-19.
On Friday, graduate student Jonathan Wells placed 21st in the men's high jump after failing to clear the second preset height.
