EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Illinois Fighting Illini women's tennis squad defeated the Michigan State Spartans on Sunday afternoon 4-2. The second win of the season for the Illini moves them to 2-5 (2-5) as the Spartans fall to 3-6 (3-5) on the year.
The Orange and Blue got out to a strong start, securing wins on court one from senior Asuka Kawai and sophomore Josie Frazier (6-2) as well as on court three from sophomore Ashley Yeah and freshman Kate Duong (6-3). The match moved to singles with the Illini holding a 1-0 lead.
K. Duong got the Illini going early with a key win on court two (6-4, 6-3) after Kawai fell on court one. Yeah then added to the lead with a win of her own on court five (6-4, 6-2) to put the team up 3-1. Michigan State won the matchup on court four before Frazier clinched the victory with an electric win on court six (7-5, 6-4). Senior Emilee Duong was leading (7-5, 5-4) on court three before her match was labeled unfinished.
Next Up
Illinois returns home to the Atkins Tennis Center for two matches next weekend. They will take on Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13 and then Nebraska at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 14.
