Meet Notes

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After one month off of team competition, the Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team returns to competition with a meet at Minnesota to wrap up the regular season. The meet is scheduled for a 4 PM CT start and will be broadcasted nationally on the Big Ten Network.

After the tri-meet on Feb. 21 saw the Illini defeat the third-ranked Nebraska and fall to first-ranked Michigan, the Illini now travel to Minnesota for their last ever regular season meeting with the Gophers in Minneapolis.

The only Illini individual to have competed since the tri-meet was junior Michael Fletcher, who competed in the 2021 Winter Cup on Feb. 26 and 28. Fletcher placed 10th in the all-around and took home the silver medal on vault, while volunteer coach Alex Diab took home the rings event title for the second year in a row.

LAST TIME OUT

The Illini last competed in a tri-meet on Feb. 21 in which the Illini defeated No. 3 Nebraska 405.550-401.600 and fell to Michigan which scored a 413.300 in the meet. Junior Hamish Carter took the event title on high bar with a score of 14.400 and the team setting new season-highs on floor, vault and high bar.

SCOUTING MINNESOTA

The Gophers are in their final NCAA season ever after their athletic program decided to cut the program after the season ends. Minnesota is 1-4 on the season with their lone win against Penn State on Mar. 6. Despite the 1-4 record, the Gophers still rank 10th in the nation, and rank fifth and six in the nation on parallel bars and high bar, respectively. Shane Wiskus is a name to watch on the Gopher squad, as he ranks third in the nation in the all-around and top 10 in nearly all events.
