LEESBURG, Fla. – Illinois junior pitcher Sydney Sickels was lights-out in Saturday's doubleheader against Penn State, throwing the program's 14th no-hitter in game two and a complete game one-hitter in game one as the Illini take two from the Nittany Lions. Sickels threw a combined 14 innings on the afternoon, tallying 20 strikeouts and allowing no earned runs as Illinois improved to 9-2 on the season after a pair of wins over Penn State.

"Sydney Sickels is a warrior," said head coach Tyra Perry. "She truly put the team on her back and went the distance today. It is always so rewarding to watch a young woman with so much integrity experience success at a high level. Our bats were a little off today but we did what we needed to do to get the job done."

GAME ONE (Illinois 1, Penn State 0)

Sydney Sickels was unstoppable in game one as she notched her third complete game of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out ten in a dominant performance for the Illini junior. Sickels had a perfect game heading in to the top of the seventh, which was broken up with a single up the middle by the Penn State's first hitter of the inning.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Illini plated the first and only run of the game. Kelly Ryono laced a triple to the right center gap with one out, allowing Shelby Stauffenberg, who entered as a pinch hitter, to drive Ryono in from third.

The Illini would get a few more baserunners in the latter half of the game, but were unable to capitalize and extend their one-run lead. Sickels remained in the game and shut the door as the Illini picked up their eighth win of the season in game one.

GAME TWO (Illinois 2, Penn State 1)

Sickels threw the 14th no-hitter in Illinois softball history in game two against the Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon. She also allowed no earned runs and struck out ten again, continuing her dominance on the afternoon.

The Illini were first to score as Jaelyn Vickery and Avrey Steiner began the inning with back-to-back bunt singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt from Kailee Powell moved both runners in scoring position for Bella Loya, who doubled to right center field, giving Illinois a 1-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions got one run back in the bottom half of the third on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring a runner from third who reached base on an error.

Illinois broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth inning as Delaney Rummell came through with a huge two-out single down the line to score Loya.

Penn State got the tying run to second base with no outs on an error to begin the seventh inning, but Sickels kept the Nittany Lions from scoring as she struck out two of the final three batters of the game, allowing Illinois to hold on for its' ninth win of the season.
