CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini soccer team is set to travel to Bloomington, In. on Saturday to take on the Indiana Hoosiers. Kickoff is set for 12 PM CT and will be broadcasted live on BTN+.

The Orange and Blue are coming off of two straight road games last week. The Illini fell at Wisconsin 1-0 last Thursday, Mar. 4 and battled to a scoreless double-overtime tie at Minnesota on Saturday, Mar. 6.

The Illini defense has been tremendous this season, only allowing three goals and recording three shutouts on the season. Contributors to the Illini defense include senior goalkeeper Sami Sample and the starting defensive line which includes freshman Joanna Verzosa-Dolezal, sophomore Aleah Treiterer, redshirt-sophomore Ashley Cathro, and senior Lauren Stibich.

Senior goalkeeper Sami Sample has been the rock of the Illini defense, recording her third shutout on the young season at Minnesota last Saturday and recording 11 saves on 30 shots faced in the two road games last week. Sample has allowed just three goals this season, and recorded 28 total saves in five games this season.

SCOUTING INDIANA

Indiana is coming off of a split road trip in which they lost to no. 10 Penn State 1-2 and defeated Maryland 3-2. Just last week, the Hoosiers were the 24th-ranked team in the nation, and continue to receive votes in the United Soccer Coaches weekly poll. The Illini hold the edge in the overall series, 13-7-4, but lost their last matchup 0-1 on Oct. 3, 2019 at Demirjian Park. The Hoosiers were picked to finish eighth in the Big Ten this season, and players to look out for include freshmen Anna Aehling and Jen Blitchok, and sophomore Avery Lockwood.

LOCKING IT DOWN

The Illini defense has been tremendous this season, allowing just three goals and recording three shutouts in five games. The Illini have consistently pressured opposing offenses this season. Key contributors to the Illini defense include senior goalkeeper Sami Sample, and the starting defensive line including freshman Joanna Verzosa-Dolezal, sophomore Aleah Treiterer, redshirt-sophomore Ashley Cathro, and senior Lauren Stibich.

UP NEXT

The Illini are back at Demirjian Park next week to wrap up their home schedule in the B1G regular season. More home games may be scheduled during the B1G "Wildcard Weekend" later this month. Illinois will face off with Nebraska on Thursday, Mar. 18, at 1 PM CT, and will face Ohio State on Sunday, Mar. 21 at 1 PM CT for senior day. Both games will be streamed live on BTN+, and live stats are available via fightingillini.com.
