
Illini Back on Track with Home Win Over Minnesota

URBANA, ILL.- The Illinois Fighting Illini women's tennis team took down the Golden Gophers of Minnesota by a score of 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The Illini's first win of the season moves them to 1-4 (1-4) on the year and drops Minnesota to 0-5 (0-5).
After a losing effort against Wisconsin on Friday, Illinois came out strong from the beginning on Sunday. Convincing doubles victories from sophomore Josie Frazier and senior Asuka Kawai on court one (6-4) and senior Sasha Belaya and senior Emilee Duong on court two (6-3) secured the doubles point for the Orange and Blue. Sophomore Ashley Yeah and freshman Kate Duong dropped their doubles match on court three (6-2) for the first time this season.
Illinois stayed hot as the match moved to singles. Yeah dominated on court five, finishing first and getting the first singles win for the squad (6-2, 6-1). K. Duong followed suit, securing a victory of her own on court three (6-3, 6-4) to move the Illinois lead to 3-0.
After E. Duong lost her match on court two (6-4, 6-0), Frazier came in clutch for Illinois taking the match-clinching win on court six (6-4, 6-3).
Next Up
Next weekend the Illini will head north to face off against Michigan and Michigan State. They will take on the Wolverines on Saturday, March 6 at 11:00 a.m. CT and the Spartans at 10:00 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 7.
