BATON ROUGE, La. – Fighting Illini junior Adrien Dumont de Chassart shot 3-under on Day 2 of the LSU Invitational, as Illinois turned in a solid team score of 289 (+1) to remain in contention just behind the surging Florida Gators at the University Club.
"It was a good day, all-in-all." head coach Mike Small said. "It wasn't our best, but it was a very difficult day on the golf course. Conditions were tough, and we live to fight another day. Tomorrow we have a chance to come out and contend for the title based on getting through a tough day today."
Dumont de Chassart's 69 ascended the Belgian 30 spots on the individual leaderboard and moved him into a tie for seventh with a two-round score of 145 (+1). He showed his resiliency, after bogeying the par-4 second, by bouncing back with four birdies the rest of the way.
"Adrien was the anchor today," Small added. "He competed really well."
Like Dumont de Chassart, Illini senior Michael Feagles made a big jump up the leaderboard by shooting under par (71) in Round 2 to move 15 spots into a tie for 12th. After opening four-under on the front nine, Feagles suffered a pair of afternoon mishaps - an 8 on par-5 11th and a bogey on 17 – to finish at 1-under for the day.
Senior Giovanni Tadiotto (74) and junior Tommy Kuhl (75) rounded out the scoring for the Illini in Round 2. Tadiotto, in particular, bounced back after bogeys on Holes 1, 2 and 4 to buoy the Illini's title hopes.
"Gio started off a little poorly today, but he rectified it and that was big," Small said. "For him to hold steady there saved us some shots. I thought it was good for Gio to do that."
Tadiotto and Kuhl are tied for 33rd with 36-hole scores of 149 (+5). They sit one stroke behind sophomore Jerry Ji, who followed his opening 69 with a 79 in Round 2. Individual competitor Brendan O'Reilly is tied for 59th in the 90-player field, with a two-round score of 153 (+9).
As a team, the Illini are 6-over at 582 through two rounds. They sit just three strokes off the pace of Florida (579), which moved from fifth to first with a Round 2 team score of 281 (-7). Vanderbilt and Arkansas State are five strokes behind the Illini in a tie for third, while South Carolina (588) rounds out the top five of the team standings.
Sunday's final round is scheduled to begin with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. CT. The Illini begin at 10:10 a.m., paired with the Gators and the Commodores. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
