Brackets

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Fighting Illini wrestling will have each of its 10 participating wrestlers competing in consolation brackets tonight during Session II at the 2020 Big Ten Championships. The Illini had seven wrestlers win their first round bouts during Session I on Saturday morning, but all were defeated in quarterfinal matchups. NCAA Championships bids will be on the line for the Illini during Session II, which begins at 5:30 p.m. CT. Fans can stream competition with subscriptions to either BTN + or FloWrestling.

Four Illini won their first-career Big Ten tournament matches during Session I's first round action. Freshman Luke Luffman upset Purdue's Thomas Penola in his first round matchup at 285-pounds, winning a 7-2 decision. Seeded ninth in the bracket, Luffman will take on seventh-seeded Seth Nevills of Penn State tonight in wrestlebacks.

Redshirt freshman Zac Braunagel picked up a ranked win in his first round bout. Ranked 13th nationally, Braunagel defeated No. 21 Jelani Embree of Michigan in a 3-2 decision. Braunagel will wrestle Wisconsin's Johnny Sebastian in the 184-pound consolation bracket tonight during Session II.

Redshirt freshman Danny Braunagel won by major decision for his first-career B1G Championships victory. Braunagel controlled throughout in his, 14-1, major decision victory over Maryland's Kyle Cochran at 165-pounds. Tonight in wrestlebacks, Braunagel will be opposed by Minnesota's Bailee O'Reilly.

Redshirt freshman Justin Cardani shutout Maryland's Brandon Cray in his first round bout, winning a 4-0 decision. Cardani will start tonight's 125-pound wrestlebacks with a matchup against Ohio State's Malik Heinselman.  

Senior Travis Piotrowski (133), redshirt sophomore Dylan Duncan (141) and redshirt senior Joey Gunther (174) also won their first round matchups. The three will wrestle tonight in wrestlebacks matches, with Piotrowski slated to take on Minnesota's Boo Dryden, Duncan taking on Michigan's Cole Mattin and Gunther facing Maryland's Philip Spadafora.

Redshirt sophomore Matt Wroblewski won his first-career B1G Championships match in Session I wrestlebacks, defeating Indiana's Nick Willham in a 3-2 decision. Wroblewski will wrestle Pudue's Christian Brunner in the next round of wrestlebacks at 197-pounds. Redshirt senior Eric Barone will be opposed by Iowa's Kaleb Young tonight in 157-pound wrestlebacks.
