CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Illinois women's tennis team closed out its three-day run at the 2020 ITA National Indoor Championships after dropping Sunday night's match against Michigan, 4-1, in the cosolation bracket. The Illini move to 3-4 on the season.
The Illini dropped the doubles point to the eighth-seeded Michigan when Michigan's duo Alyvia Jones and Andrea Cerdan clinched at No. 1 with a 7-5 win over freshman Josie Frazier and junior Emilee Duong. At No.2 doubles, Chiara Lommer and Guiliana Pairone of Michigan defeated junior duo Mia Rabinowitz and Sasha Belaya, 6-1.
Michigan secured its victory with triumphs at No. 5, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Michigan's Jones powered past Frazier, 6-0, 6-2, to grab the first singles point for her team before Nicole Hammond of Michigan battled to a 7-5, 6-1, win over Belaya. Rabinowitz claimed the lone singles point for the Orange and Blue taking the match from Cerdan, 7-5, 6-0. Lommer of Michigan clinched the fourth and final point with a 7-5, 6-1, win against freshman Ashley Yeah.
When play was halted, Kawai was led by her Michigan opponent, Pairone, 7-5, 5-2, while Duong was leading in the second set, 2-1, after Bella Lorenzini of Michigan claimed the tiebreak point in the first set, 7-6 (4).

The Illinois women's tennis team will play in its first two road matches of the season as they travel to Texas. The Fighting Illini take on Texas A&M on Friday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. CT in College Station, Texas before finishing off the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match on Feb. 16 against Baylor in Waco, Texas at 12 p.m. CT.
