CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Illinois women's tennis team came up short to Texas, 4-1, in the consolation bracket of the 2020 ITA National Indoor Championships, hosted by the Illini, at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago on Saturday night. The Fighting Illini take on Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Texas picked up the doubles point after Fernanda Labrana and Marta Perez Mur of Texas battled past juniors Sasha Belaya and Mia Rabinowitz, 6-2, to clinch in the No. 2 spot. Texas' Bianca and Anna Turati were first to finish at No. 1 with a win over freshman Josie Frazier and junior Emilee Duong, 6-2.

Texas' Labrana secured the victory for the Longhorns, clinching a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 4 singles against freshman Ashley Yeah. A. Turati earned the first point for Texas with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rabinowitz at No. 2, before Duong claimed the first point on the night for the Illini. Duong powered past Perez Mur, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Junior Asuka Kawai fell, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot to Longhorns opponent B. Turati.

The Illini compete Sunday, Feb. 9 as they look to take on the eighth-seeded Michigan for a 6:30 p.m. CT match up. The Wolverines were defeated, 4-3, by Ohio State on Saturday night. 

Looking Ahead

The Illinois women's tennis team will play in its first two road matches of the season as they travel to Texas. The Fighting Illini take on Texas A&M on Friday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. CT in College Station, Texas before finishing off the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match on Feb. 16 against Baylor in Waco, Texas at 12 p.m. CT.
