Illini Women's Tennis Bested By #20 Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Illinois women's tennis team concluded its weekend trip to the west coast on Sunday afternoon in Seattle with a 4-1 loss to No. 20 Washington at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Illini fall to 4-7 on the season while Washington improves to 9-3 overall.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Sasha Belaya and freshman Emily Casati defeated their Huskies opponents, Katarina Kopcalic and Nika Zupancic, 6-2, to put the Fighting Illini ahead 1-0 in doubles play. Washington's Sedona Gallagher and Zoey Weil downed junior Mia Rabinowitz and freshman Ashley Yeah, 6-4, at No. 2, to tie it 1-1 in doubles competition. Freshman Josie Frazier and Emilee Duong helped the Orange and Blue clinch the doubles point on the No. 1 court with a 7-6 (9) win over 54th-ranked duo Vanessa Wong and Natsuho Arakawa of Washington.

The Huskies claimed the match with singles victories at No. 1, No. 6, and No. 5. Gallagher of Washington took the decisive match at No. 3 singles, battling past Frazier, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

Belaya was halted at No. 2 singles with opponent, 106th-ranked Arakawa, with the score 6-4, 2-6, 1-3, while Duong went unfinished on court No. 4 with Kopcalic with the score at 6-3, 4-6, 2-3.

The Fighting Illini return to Atkins Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 28, for a match up with No. 42 Kansas at 3 p.m. CT, before taking on Oklahoma on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
