Illini Pick Up Win at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. — Ty Weber did not allow an earned run in five innings Saturday and the Illinois baseball team's bullpen threw four shutout frames to lead the Illini to a 5-2 win at Coastal Carolina. Illinois has split its first two games of the Brittain Resorts Invitational ahead of Sunday's matchup with West Virginia.

"A lot of positives and still a lot of things we need to clean up," said head coach Dan Hartleb. "It feels good to get a win. These guys have worked hard and had a good attitude and continue to get better."

Weber (2-0) won his second game of the season in his third career outing at Coastal Carolina. The senior owns a 2-0 record and 2.41 ERA in 18 2/3 career innings against the Chanticleers.

The bullpen was anchored by Ryan Kutt (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 SO), Ryan Schmitt (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 SO) and Garrett Acton (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 SO). Schmitt and Acton got strikeouts to end the eighth and ninth, respectively, with Coastal's potential go-ahead run at the plate.

Taylor Jackson, Branden Comia, and Alex Steinbach all had two hits as every Illini in the lineup reached base at least once. Steinbach tripled off the top of the right field wall in the fourth and Nathan Aide doubled off the wall in the second, nearly giving Illinois a pair of homers.

Illinois (2-3) had more hits with runners in scoring position against Coastal (3) than over the first four game combined (2). Kellen Sarver had an RBI single with two outs in Illinois' three-run fifth inning that sparked the win. He also added an RBI on a ninth-inning bases-loaded walk.

Illinois and West Virginia start at 9 a.m. CT Sunday at TicketReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach. Freshman Cole Kirschsieper is scheduled to make his first career start.
