LIHUE, Hawai'i – Senior Michael Feagles climbed 26 spots up the individual leaderboard in Round 2 of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Friday, helping the Fighting Illini – despite some late-round lapses – to maintain their position near the top of the team standings heading into Saturday's final round of action at Wailua Golf Course.

"I'm proud of the effort that we gave today with the intent of cleaning up some of our early-season mistakes that we made yesterday," said Illini head coach Mike Small. "Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain our good play through the end of the round, but If we can continue to make progress tomorrow, we will have a good chance of being in contention at the end."

Feagles, who opened with a 74 (+2) shaved five strokes in his second round, carding a 3-under 69 to jump from a tie for 38th into a share of 12th with a 36-hole score of 143 (-1). Fellow senior Giovanni Tadiotto is tied with Feagles and 11 others just one stroke outside of the individual top 10, and three strokes off the pace of the four golfers tied for the tournament lead, a group that includes Illinois sophomore Tommy Kuhl, who is competing as an individual. Kuhl followed his opening round of 69 with a 1-under 71 to sit a 4-under par with 18 to play.

Sophomore Adrien Dumont de Chassart also rose up the leaderboard with an even-par 72 in Round 2 to move up five spots into a tie for 33rd at 146 (+2). Freshman Jerry Ji is one shot ahead of Dumont de Chassart in a tie for 27th. Sophomore Noah Gillard improved two strokes from Round 1 with a 2-over 74 on Friday, but dropped one spot into a tie for 76th in the 124-golfer field.

As a team, the Illini are 1-over (577) through 36 holes, two strokes ahead of sixth-place Arizona. Texas A&M shot even-par in Round 1, but carded a Round 2 team score of 7-under to take over the lead with a 36-hole total of 569. BYU (571), New Mexico (573), and UNC Wilmington (574) sit just ahead of the Illini to round out the top five.

Round 3 is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT/8 a.m. HT tomorrow. The Illini will tee off of Holes 4-6, and will be paired with Arizona, UNLV and Cal State Fullerton. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.
