Shegos Makes History on Day Two of Big Ten Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa. – Sophomore Taylor Shegos became the first diver in Illinois history to be seeded No. 1 in the preliminary round of the one-meter diving competition, highlighting day two at the Big Ten Championships, which also saw the Illini post two top-10 all-time marks and 11 lifetime-bests on the day.
"Taylor had a breakthrough performance today on one-meter," said head coach Sue Novitsky. "She was calm and executed her dives so well and gained valuable experience in the finals. We had over 60% lifetime best times on the day. We have a big day tomorrow with a lot of swims and we want to keep stepping up and competing."
Shegos totaled a 289.00 in the one-meter prelims, placing first in the event to move on to the finals. The Fenton, Mich., became the first Illini diver to do so, in program history. The sophomore took eighth-place in the finals with a score of 239.25.
The 400 medley relay team membered by redshirt senior Aby Olson, freshmen Divya Kale and Athena Salafatinos, and senior Kristin Anderson clocked a 3:43.34, making it the seventh-fastest relay time. Olson swam the second-fastest 50 backstroke in school history with a leadoff split of :26.07.
During the 500 freestyle prelims, sophomore Abigail Martin had a personal-best 5:01.61 to place 71st overall. In the 200 individual medley, junior Michell McCord led the way with a season-best 2:02.40, finishing 37th overall. Freshman Kaleigh Haworth (2:04.00) and senior Fiona McDermott (2:05.05) recorded personal-bests in the event, taking 47th and 55th overall, respectively.
Seven Illini posted personal bests in the 50 freestyle. Junior Gabrielle Loeck secured the top spot for the Orange and Blue, placing 66th overall with a personal-best time of :23.73. Olson followed with a lifetime-best of :23.81 to tie for 71st overall, while freshman Linda Licari clocked a personal record of :24.05 to claim 79th overall. Freshmen Mariclaire Lynch (24.22) and Kale (24.46) each recorded lifetime-bests in the event, finishing 83rd and 89th, respectively. Sophomore Kaylee Heimes was 91st with times personal-best of :24.69, while fellow sophomore Sarah Cano rounded out the event 95th overall with a lifetime-best of :24.82.
Senior Rebecca Corzine had a personal record in the 50 freestyle time trial, swimming a time of 24.01 to place first of two.
The Illini sit in 13th place with a total of 108 with two days still to go. Ohio State leads the field with 561 points, followed by Michigan (478), Indiana (338), Wisconsin (257), Northwestern (242), Minnesota (235), Purdue (202), Iowa (168), Penn State (161), Nebraska (158), Rutgers (135), and Michigan State (111).
