URBANA, Ill. – The University of Illinois women's tennis team takes on No. 5 Duke and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville for a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 2 at Atkins Tennis Center.
The Fighting Illini face No. 5 Duke at 12 p.m. CT, while doubles play against SIU-Edwardsville begins at 4 p.m. CT.
LAST TIME OUT
The Illini enter the weekend with a 2-0 record after last week's action. Last Sunday, the Orange and Blue picked up a 7-0 win over Eastern Michigan and a 4-0 victory against Eastern Illinois.
Illinois grabbed the doubles point against both opponents as junior Asuka Kawai and freshman Ashley Yeah took the doubles match from Natalia Regalado and Emma-Lou Pommiers of EMU, 6-4, and Kawai and freshman Emily Casati powered past EIU's Shelby Anderson and Kaitlyn Snyder, 6-0.
Casati helped the Fighting Illini clinched the fourth singles point for the Illini in her 6-0 victory against Pommiers of EMU, while Yeah finished off the match against EIU with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lauren Ellis.
PROMOTIONS – GROUNDHOG DAY
Celebrate Groundhog's Day on Sunday as the Fighting Illini take on the No. 5 Blue Devils and the Cougars. Decide if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring with a fan's choice of a beanie or sunglasses and enjoy complimentary Jimmy John's.
SCOUTING DUKE
The Blue Devils are 4-1 to begin their spring slate. Duke earned its first victory of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Grand Canyon on Jan. 14. The Blue Devils have since gone on to defeat Elon (7-0), Kansas State (4-0) and Tulsa (4-0). Duke fell 4-2 to No. 12 Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 31.
Duke holds a 1-6 advantage over the Illini in the all-time series. The two programs last met last year, as the Blue Devils downed the Orange and Blue, 4-0, on Feb. 3.
SCOUTING SIUE
The Cougars enter the weekend with a 2-0 record. SIUE defeated Chicago State (6-1) in its first win of the season. The Cougars took on Bradley on Friday, Jan. 31, where they battled to a 4-3 victory over the Braves.
Illinois is 10-3 all time against SIUE. Sunday's match marks the first meeting between the two teams since March 4, 1988.
