OMAHA, Neb. – Illinois had two top-ten finishers at the U23 and Junior National Championships on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 15) at Chi Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Five Illini wrestlers competed, all representing the Illinois Regional Training Center/Illini WC.
Illini redshirt sophomore Danny Braunagel placed runner-up at 74kg/163 pounds after making the decision to compete in a higher age class for an added challenge. Braunagel fell to three-time All-American Evan Wick in the 74kg final (10-6), notching the same number of takedowns but ultimately getting tilted for the deciding points.
Luke Luffman wrestled at 125kg/275 pounds, taking home a seventh-place finish after making the decision to compete in a higher age class. The Illini were also represented by Trey Sizemore (2-2) and Andrew Cohen (1-2) in the U23 Freestyle. Illinois freshman Chase Waggoner (1-2) competed in the UWW Junior Freestyle.
Illinois had several other athletes set to wrestle, but were unable to compete due to COVID-19 restrictions.
