August 27, 2019 | Soccer
ROSEMONT, Illinois – Fighting Illini freshman Eileen Murphy was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office. The recognition comes after the La Grange Park, Illinois, native netted the first goal of her career in a 3-2 victory over Dayton. The weekly conference honor marks the first for Murphy in her career and the first for an Illini this season.
Murphy has earned two starts for the Orange and Blue this season, helping Illinois start the year with a 2-0-0 record. Murphy played 70 minutes in UI's season-opening victory over Loyola, adding one shot in the match. She netted her first career goal on Sunday against Dayton, the game-winning goal to carry Illinois to a 3-2 win. Murphy won a corner kick from junior Hope Breslin in the air and sent it into the lower corner of the net. She has tallied two shots so far this season and played 133 minutes for Illinois.
Next up, Murphy and the Illini are set for a four-game road stretch, beginning Friday in California. The Orange and Blue are set to face Pepperdine at 5 p.m. Friday, August 30 before taking on San Francisco on Sunday, September 1 in Los Angeles.
