EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 7 seeded Fighting Illini women's golf team is in a tie for fifth after the second round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional on Tuesday at Forest Akers West Golf Course (Par 72, 6,387) in East Lansing, Mich. Remaining in the top six, the No. 19 Illini sit at 16-over par with the No. 49 Indiana Hoosiers.
The top six teams and the top three individuals not from qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Illinois is four strokes behind fourth-place Stanford and three strokes ahead of seventh place LSU and Baylor. As a team, the Orange and Blue sit in second with 29 birdies behind current co-leader, Kent State.
Freshman Kornkamol Sukaree converted some key birdie opportunities down the stretch, surging to third with another 71 (-1) round and nine birdies overall. Sukaree also remained bogey-free on the back nine holes.
Remaining in the top-40 are returners Bing Singhsumalee and junior Tristyn Nowlin. Singhsumalee recorded a 149 (+5) for 36th place, which included a first-round score of 71 (-1). Other than a bogey on hole No. 2, Nowlin was unblemished on the front nine holes. She currently is tied for 36th with 150 (+4).
In the top 50, freshman Crystal Wang is tied at 46th with 152 (+8). Wang posted another 4-over-par 76 and four birdies (including three on the front nine holes). Freshman Katie Hallinan is in a six-way tie for 69th with a 155 (+11).
As the only teams under-par, No. 3 seed Kent State remains in the lead with 573 (-3), while reigning NCAA Champions, No. 2 seed Arizona, still sit in second with 2-under par. Pac-12 teams, UCLA and Stanford, surged to third and fourth with 581 (+5) and 588 (+12), respectively. No. 8 seed Baylor and LSU are both in the hunt for an NCAA appearance, sitting in seventh with 595 (+19).
In the individual standings, UCLA's Patty Tavatanakit leads the pack with 7-under-par 137, while Michigan State's Haylin Harris remains in second at 3-under-par 141. The Illini's Sukaree is in a three-way tie with Baylor's Gurleen Kaur and Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong at 2-under-par 142.
The final round is set for Wednesday morning with the Illini teeing off hole No. 1 at 8:09 a.m. CT / 9:09 a.m. ET in the order of Hallinan, Wang, Nowlin, Singhsumalee, and Sukaree. Illinois will be paired with No. 1 seed Stanford and Big Ten opponent, Indiana.
