EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 19 Illini finished the first round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional in third at 4-over par at Forest Akers West Golf Course (Par 72, 6,387) in East Lansing, Mich. As a team, the Orange and Blue led the field with 17 birdies and sits in second behind No. 1 seeded Stanford at 1-over in par-3 scoring.
"Looking forward to two strong days after a solid start today", said head coach Renee Slone. "Today's round emphasized some key areas that are necessary to play this course well."
Senior Bing Singhsumalee and freshman Kornkamol Sukaree both fired a 1-under par 71 for sixth-place to lead the Illini after day one. Both Singhsumalee and Sukaree posted five birdies each, tying for second-overall. Junior Tristyn Nowlin comes in the top 30, tied at 29th with 74 (+2). Rounding out the fivesome are freshmen duo, Crystal Wang tied for 43rd and Katie Hallinan at 67th. Wang recorded a 76 (+4), while Hallinan was 6-over par.
As the only team under-par, No. 3 seed Kent State holds the lead with 286 (-6). The reigning NCAA Champions, No. 2 seed Arizona, sits in second with 2-over par. Following the Illini are a pair of Big Ten schools tied for fourth – Indiana and host No. 5 seed Michigan State. No. 6 seed Campbell makes the cut in sixth. Just below the cutline are No. 4 seed UCLA at seventh, while No. 1 seed Stanford and No. 8 seed Baylor are tied for eighth.
The top six teams and the top three individuals not from qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.Â
The second round will begin on Tuesday morning with the Illini teeing off at 9:04 a.m. CT / 10:04 a.m. ET in the order of Hallinan, Wang, Nowlin, Singhsumalee, and Sukaree. They will be paired with current leader, No. 3 seed Kent State, and reigning 2018 NCAA champions, Arizona.
