Sherlund’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts Illini over Rockets in NCAA Regional

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Kiana Sherlund smoked a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Illinois softball team to a 2-0 walk-off win over Toledo in an NCAA Lexington Regional elimination game on a hot Saturday (May 18) afternoon at John Cropp Stadium.

The Illini (33-24) move on to face Virginia Tech in their second elimination game of the day.

Freshman Sydney Sickels (19-13) threw a scoreless gem against the Rockets (29-28), allowing just three hits and five walks, while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts in a complete game win.

Illinois totaled five hits in the contest, with freshman Avrey Steiner going 2-for-3 with a run to lead the team.

Despite the pitcher's duel, both teams combined to leave 16 runners on base, with just two Illini reaching third base before Sherlund's heroics in the bottom of the seventh.
