MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Fighting Illini men's golf remained among the top teams at the 2019 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional on Tuesday, using an even par second round score to move into a tie for second place through two rounds of play. Junior Michael Feagles was strong for the Orange and Blue, firing a 4-under par second-round tally to climb into a tie for the individual lead. Freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart is also among the top individuals as he is 5-under par in total and tied for fourth. The Illini are joined among the top five teams on the leaderboard by current tournament leader, Ohio State (-11), Wake Forest (-9), UNLV (-4) and California (-2). Tee times for tomorrow's final round are set to begin at 6:30 a.m. CT.
"We're excited for tomorrow," head coach Mike Small said. "We are in position to have a good tournament, and the leader is within range. We need to play more like we did on the first day of this tournament; we seemed a little jumpy today and we did not have as much control of our golf ball. Michael {Feagles} played well, and if we can get more than one guy to play like that tomorrow it will be a big plus. All-in-all, today was a solid day and when you are in this position at NCAA Regionals, there are a lot of positives to take away and optimism to bring into tomorrow's final round."
Feagles picked up momentum from the start on Tuesday. He posted a birdie on the second hole, and followed that up with an eagle on the Par 5, No. 6. The junior added two more birdies on the back nine, which negated his only bogey on the 11th hole. At 8-under par through two rounds, Feagles currently is tied atop the leaderboard with Oregon's Edwin Yi.
Dumont de Chassart closed Tuesday's round at even par, carding three birdies on the day. He is 5-under par in total heading into Wednesday's final round of play.
Freshman Tommy Kuhl sits 2-over par through the second round of play at TPC Myrtle Beach. Kuhl carded four birdies on Tuesday, including a pair on the 13th and 14th holes, to finish the day at even par. He is tied for 26th individually.
Sophomore Varun Chopra closed Tuesday's round at 4-over par to tie for 41st overall, while junior Giovanni Tadiotto is 6-over par through two rounds of play and tied for 57th. Â
