URBANA, Ill. - The Illinois women's tennis team came up short to No. 18 Michigan, 4-3, on Sunday at Atkins Tennis Center. The loss snaps an 11-match home winning streak for the Illini, who will hit the road for matchups at both Wisconsin and Minnesota next weekend. The Orange and Blue move to 9-9 overall on the season and 4-3 in conference play.
The Illini got off to a stellar start in doubles play with exciting victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Emilee Duong and Daniela Pedraza Novak combined to take care of Michigan's Pairone/Craciun, 6-3, before the pair of Asuka Kawai and Mia Rabinowitz defeated Jones/Lommer, 6-4. Illinois has now won 14 doubles points this season, including seven in the last eight matches.Â
Michigan came back with a strong performance in singles play, as the Wolverines rattled off wins on courts three, two, one and four to clinch the match victory. The Illini got two more points from Daniela Pedraza Novak and Emilee Duong. Novak took down Alyvia Jones, 6-4, 6-4, and Duong claimed a third-set tiebreak victory over Anca Craciun with a final score of 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(8).
