
Final Results
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Fighting Illini men's golf closed play at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on Sunday, finishing 6-under par as a team. The Orange and Blue shot 2-under par in Sunday's final round, finishing in seventh as a team. Sophomore Varun Chopra led the 23rd-ranked Illini in the tournament, closing play 3-under par and tied for 16th. He was joined among the top 25 individuals by Junior Michael Feagles and freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart who tied for 24th overall.
Wake Forest earned the tournament title with a team total 36-under par, while South Carolina (-33) and Texas (-30) rounded out the top three teams
"It was a tough week for our guys and we struggled on the greens from the start," Head coach Mike Small said. "I think that carried over into the rest of our games as we continued to make too many unforced errors. This is the time of year when we need to get this sloppy play corrected, with no ifs, ands or buts about it."
Chopra closed the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational with a 2-under par second round tally on Sunday. He shot even par on the front nine to start the day, recording two birdies to negate two early bogeys. He added three more birdies on the back nine, moving into a tie for 16th individually. The finish marks his second-straight top 20 finish this season.
Feagles also shot 2-under par on Sunday, to earn a three-round tally of 2-under par. He made the turn at 1-over par, and used four birdies on the back nine to negate early bogeys in the round. Dumont de Chassart shot even par on Sunday and earned his fourth top-25 finish of the season. Feagles has placed among the top 25 individuals in seven tournaments this season
Junior Giovanni Tadiotto tied for 42nd overall, as he closed play with a total score 3-over par. Tadiotto added another eagle to his tournament tally on Sunday, helping to negate early bogeys on the day. He was 4-over par in total on Sunday.
Sophomore Brendan O'Reilly also carded an eagle for the Illini on Sunday, as he shot 2-over par for the round. He tied for 63rd with a total score 12-over par.
THE TOURNAMENT
Hosted by the Augusta Jaguars, the 54-hole Augusta Haskins Award Invitational took place at Forest Hills Golf Club. The 23rd-ranked Illini were joined by 14 other teams on the Par 72, 7,005-yard course at Forest Hills, including No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 7 Texas, No. 19 South Carolina, Augusta, Houston, Air Force, UCF, Arkansas, Northern Illinois, Georgia State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Mercer and USC Aiken.
NEXT UP
The Orange and Blue will return to Champaign for a week off from competition before taking on the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational, April 20-21. The 54-hole tournament will be held at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
