IOWA CITY -  It was quite the end to the 2019 Big Ten Championships for the Illinois men's gymnastics team, as the Illini came home with a pair of individual event titles. Senior Alex Diab secured a historic fourth-straight still rings title, while freshman Hamish Carter claimed the conference title on high bar.

After team competition on Friday, seven Illini gymnasts qualified for event finals, including Carter, Diab, Max Diab, Michael Fletcher, Jacob Light, Sebastian Quiana and Michael Paradise.  Starting the meet on floor, Quiana posted an impressive routine for the Illini, coming away with a 14.400 to place fourth on the event for the second-straight year. Pommel horse was up next and Paradise earned a bronze finish with a 14.725 total.

Alex Diab added yet another piece of hardware to his collection, as the Glen Ellyn, Ill., native earned a 14.975 on rings to win his fourth-straight Big Ten Championship on the event. Diab is just the second Big Ten gymnast ever to win four-straight conference titles on any single event, joining Indiana's Ben Fernandez, who did so on rings from 1971-74. Minnesota's John Roethlisberger also won four-straight conference all-around titles from 1990-93. Sophomore Max Diab also had an impressive showing on the event, registering a 14.275 to place fifth.

The Illini had a pair of gymnasts compete on vault. Jacob Light earned a fifth-place finish (14.475), while Michael Fletcher placed 10th with a 13.225. Fletcher came back strong on parallel bars, as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year recorded a 13.750 to place fifth. Quiana also competed on parallel bars and tied for sixth with a 13.600.

Alex Diab competed on high bar and posted a 13.150, but it was freshman Hamish Carter who stole the show on the event. Carter turned in a beautiful set to earn a 14.175 and claim the Big Ten title. Carter is the second-straight high bar champion for the Illini, as Chandler Eggleston won the event a year ago.
