AUGUSTA, Ga. – Fighting Illini men's golf opened play at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on Saturday, playing 36 holes at Forest Hills Golf Club (Par 72, 7,005-yards). Three Illini currently sit among the top 25 individuals through two rounds of play, led by freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart who is 2-under par and tied for 22nd. As a team, the Orange and Blue closed the day in seventh, with a team total at 4-under par. The final round of play is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT on Sunday.Â
Wake Forest (-29) leads the tournament field heading into tomorrow's final round, and is joined by Texas (-27) and Arkansas (-19) among the top three teams.
Dumont de Chassart got off to a strong start for Illinois on Saturday morning, opening play with a 4-under par first-round tally. He posted three birdies in his first nine holes, negating a bogey before making the turn. Dumont de Chassart added another pair of birdies on the back nine to sit at 4-under before his second 18 holes. He shot 2-over par in the second round of the day and will enter the final round with a total tally 2-under par.
Junior Giovanni Tadiotto and sophomore Varun Chopra are tied for 25th individually heading into the final round. Tadiotto started the day 3-over par through his first round, recording four birdies to start the day. He picked up the momentum during the second round, shooting 4-under par to move to 1-under for the day. Tadiotto recorded three birdies on the front nine of his second round of play, and added another two after the turn. He also posted an eagle for the Orange and Blue on the 18th hole. Chopra is also 1-under par through two rounds. He shot 2-under par to start the tournament, adding five first-round birdies. He finished the second round at 1-over par.
Senior Michael Feagles sits at even par for the day, tied for 32nd. He shot 2-under par in the first round, using four birdies to negate two early bogeys. He added another three birdies oin the second round, finishing 2-over par.
Sophomore Brendan O'Reilly is 10-over par through two rounds of play, sitting in 70th individually.
THE TOURNAMENT
Hosted by the Augusta Jaguars, the 54-hole event will take place at Forest Hills Golf Club April 6-7. The 23rd-ranked Illini are joined by 14 other teams on the Par 72, 7,005-yard course at Forest Hills, including No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 7 Texas, No. 19 South Carolina, Augusta, Houston, Air Force, UCF, Arkansas, Northern Illinois, Georgia State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Mercer and USC Aiken. The final round at the Augusta Haskins Invitational will be played on Sunday, beginning with tee times at 7:30 a.m. CT.
