CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Illinois baseball team and Maryland split a doubleheader Saturday with the Illini taking the first game 5-1 before falling 8-4 in the nightcap. A crowd of 2,768 watched as Maryland clinched the three-game set 2-1.
Illinois (20-10, 1-5 Big Ten) was led in Game 1 by three hits from Grant Van Scoy, who extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games and reached base streak to 13 games. Van Scoy upped his team-leading batting average to .383.
Maryland (15-15, 3-3 Big Ten) evened its overall and Big Ten records with the split. The Terrapins won a series against Illinois for the first time in four years.
Game 1 - Illinois 5, Maryland 1
Grant Van Scoy had three hits and Ty Weber threw 7 2/3 innings while allowing one run to carry Illinois to a 5-1 win against Maryland.
Van Scoy tripled in the fifth and scored, doubled in the seventh and scored, then had a two-RBI single in the eight to give Illinois a pair of insurance runs. He tied his career high with three hits and was a home run away from the cycle.
Weber's only blemish was a solo homer allowed to Josh Maguire, otherwise the junior right-hander was nearly flawless. He allowed only four hits in 7 2/3 innings and struck out three without issuing a walk.
Freshman Jacob Campbell added a two-run homer in the seventh, his first career collegiate homer.
Game 2 - Maryland 8, Illinois 4
Maryland hit two three-run home runs in Game 2 to split the doubleheader and clinch the series with a 8-4 win over Illinois. The Illini battled to tie the game 4-4 in the seventh, but Maxwell Costes' three-run shot in the eighth put the game out of reach.
