CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Fighting Illini men's golf sits atop the leaderboard in a tight race at the 2019 Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The 24th-ranked Orange and Blue are 2-under par through two rounds of play, joined among the top three teams by No. 30 North Carolina (-1) and No. 13 North Florida (+6). Led by freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart, five Illini are currently among the top 10 individuals heading into tomorrow's final round of play. Dumont de Chassart leads all players with a total score 7-under par. He finished the day with a 4-under par, bogey-free final round. Junior Michael Feagles and sophomore Brendan O'Reilly are tied for third individually, with scores 3-under par, and junior Giovanni Tadiotto is tied for sixth at 2-under par.
"I thought Adrien {Dumont de Chassart} had a good presence all day today and Michael {Feagles} played well for most of the day," head coach Mike Small said. "It has been a common theme this spring where we play a lot of good golf, but we still have too many unforced errors in situations that stop us from creating some strong momentum. I'm excited to come out here tomorrow and play a good North Carolina team on their home golf course. It's going to be a good challenge and I'm excited to see how our young team responds."
Dumont de Chassart was strong for the Illini throughout the day. He opened play with four birdies in his first six holes, and shot 3-under par for the first round of play. He continued his consistent play throughout the second round, adding another four birdies for the Orange and Blue to finish 7-under par in total.
Feagles also got off to a strong start on Saturday morning, posting consecutive birdies on the second and third holes. He added two more birdies on the front nine, negating a bogey before the turn. Feagles tallied three more birdies on the back nine to negate late bogeys and head into the second round of play with a total tally 3-under par. He continued to make birdies throughout his second 18 holes, finishing the day with 11 birdies to lead all players. Feagles is 3-under par heading into tomorrow's final round of play.
Junior Bryan Baumgarten is tied for 27th individually with a two-round tally 4-over par. Shot 1-over par to open the day, recording two birdies in his first round. He added another birdie in the second round of the day as well.
Also competing in the team lineups, freshman Tommy Kuhl is tied for 47th with a score 8-over par, and freshman Noah Gillard is 9-over par and tied for 55th.
Playing as an individual, O'Reilly shot 4-under par to start the day. He carded an eagle and four birdies in his first 18-holes, continuing on to birdie the first hole of his second round. He shot 1-over par for the second round of the play, sitting in a tie for third individually.
Also representing the Illini as an individual, Tadiotto is 2-under par through two rounds of play. He also added an eagle for Illinois in his opening round, on the way to a 3-under par start to the day. He shot 1-over par for the second round, using three birdies to negate bogeys on the front nine.
Sophomore Varun Chopra also sits among the top 10 individuals after 36-holes. He is tied for 10th with a total score 1-under par. Chopra shot even par in his first round, and used three birdies to negate early bogeys in his second round of play.
