MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 22 Fighting Illini women's tennis team topped Alabama, 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2018 Blue Gray National Tennis Classic to extend its win streak to five matches. Second round action kicked off with Wake Forest taking the doubles point over the Illini. The two teams will wrap up the match with singles play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT. 

Illinois jumped out to a quick lead in doubles play against the Tide, picking up wins on courts two and three. The pair of Switkes and Duong were first to finish with a 6-0 sweep over Pou/Fabian. Kawai/Rabinowitz clinched the early one-point advantage with a 6-2 victory over Selim/Gintrand. 

The Illini extended their lead in singles, as sophomore Mia Rabinowitz defeated Alba Cortina Pou, 6-1, 6-2, on court three to pick up her fifth-straight singles victory. After Alabama got on the board with a win on court one, sophomore Sasha Belaya and senior Daniela Pedraza Novak sealed the victory for the Orange and Blue. Belaya earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lua Fabian on court five and Novak clinched the match, taking down Kimberly Gintrand 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on six.
