LAS VEGAS - Three Fighting Illini gymnasts competed in the final round of the 2019 Winter Cup Challenge on Sunday night at the South Point Hotel. Senior Alex Diab placed second on still rings, while junior Sebastian Quiana and freshman Michael Fletcher each earned two top-10 event finishes.
After registering a 14.550 still rings total during the preliminary round on Friday, Diab put up a 14.600 to finish with a two-day total of 29.150 and place second on the event. Former Penn State gymnast Trevor Howard took the gold with a 29.750 total. Diab also placed 10th on both floor and vault, finishing with scores of 27.250 and 28.350, respectively.
Quiana earned two top-10 finishes of his own, placing ninth on both floor and high bar. The junior put together floor scores of 13.750 and 13.550, as well as high bar totals of 13.350 and 13.250.
Competing at the event for the first time in the senior division, freshman Michael Fletcher made quite the impression. Fletcher put together pommel horse totals of 13.500 and 13.050 to place sixth on the event and claimed the eighth spot on vault with scores of 14.450 and 14.150.
