URBANA, Ill. -Â The Fighting Illini women's tennis team picked up its third-straight win on Friday, as Illinois claimed a 4-3 victory over Texas A&M inside of Atkins Tennis Center. The win marks the eighth-straight victory at home for the Orange and Blue.Â
The Illini got off to a strong start, securing the doubles point for the third time this season. After McBryde/Townsend swept by Switkes/Duong, 6-0, on court three, UI responded with wins on one and five to give Illinois the early one-point advantage. Â
The Fighting Illini kept the momentum rolling into singles play, picking up first-set wins on five of six courts. Daniela Pedraza Novak gave Illinois a 2-0 lead early with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Lucia Quiterio on court six and Mia Rabinowitz put the Illini on the brink of clinching, as the sophomore took down No. 109 Tatiana Makarova, 6-0, 6-3, on court three.Â
The Aggies got themselves close with wins on four and one, but Illinois got a gutsy performance from Jaclyn Switkes on court two to secure the victory. The senior defeated No. 89 Jayci Goldsmith, 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-5, to give Illinois its third-straight winÂ
Illinois will wrap up its four-match homestand with a matchup with Baylor on Sunday, February 17. Action begins at 11 a.m. CT.Â
