ILLINOIS VS. THE FIELD
The No. 18 Illinois volleyball team continues Big Ten Conference action with its first road trip of the conference slate, traveling to the state of Indiana for a pair of matches this weekend.Â
The Illini will face Indiana on Friday (October 4) night at 6 p.m. CT at Wilkinson Hall in Bloomington, Ind., before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for a Sunday (October 6) afternoon match against No. 17 Purdue at 2 p.m. CT in Holloway Gymnasium.Â
The Illini hold a 68-17 all-time record against Indiana - including a 29-8 mark on the road - and have won 14-straight dating back to the 2011 season. Illinois fought its way back from a two-set deficit to earn a come-from-behind five set victory over the Hoosiers in last season's lone meeting on September 23 in Bloomington.
The Illini also own a 47-41 advantage in the all-time series with Purdue, but are 17-22 in West Lafayette. The Illini took a pair of 3-1 wins over the Boilermakers a season ago.
ILLINI SPLIT B1G OPENING WEEKEND
Illinois split it Big Ten Conference opening-weekend, as the Illini took No. 3 Nebraska to five sets before falling just short on Friday and then rebounding for season's first sweep of the season in a 3-0 win over Iowa on Saturday.
LAST WEEK STANDOUTS
Senior Jacqueline Quade paced the Illini with 32 kills in eight sets for 4.00 kills per set, as well as turning in team-highs of 19 digs and five service aces. Quade opened her weekend with her fourth double-double of the season against the Huskers as she totaled a match-high 18 kills and was the co-leader for the Illini with 13 digs to go along with three service aces. She then notched a match-high 14 kills as well as six digs and two blocks in the win over the Hawkeyes.
Redshirt-freshman Diana Brown registered 89 assists for a 11.12 assists per set mark, as the Illini as a team hit at a .223 percentage. She also added a team-high 19 digs to go along with 10 kills on a .320 attack clip, six blocks and two service aces. She opened her weekend by earning her team-leading sixth double-double of the season against the Huskers as she passed out 51 assists to go along with 11 digs and equaled a career-high with four blocks on the night. She continued her strong play on Saturday night against the Hawkeyes, handing out 38 assists en route to leading the Illini to a .303 team hitting percentage as well as eight digs and six kills on a .385 clip.Â
QUADE KILLING IT
Senior Jacqueline Quade has totaled 214 kills in 47 sets for the Illini in 2019 for a 4.55 kills per set average to lead the Big Ten and rank 16th in the nation.
NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS
Senior Ashlyn Fleming ranks eight in the NCAA active careers leaders with a .363 hitting percentage with 881 kills on 222 errors and 1,813 swings, while also sitting 10th with 417 total blocks in her four-year career. Â
Classmate Jacqueline Quade also sits ninth in NCAA active career leaders with 1,496 kills in her four-year career.Â
ILLINI IN B1G RANKINGS
Several Illini are ranked in the top 15 in the Big Ten Conference statistics.Â
Along with Jacqueline Quade leading the league in kills per set, redshirt-freshman Diana Brown sits sixth with 10.47 assists per set after handing out 492 helpers in 47 sets.Â
Senior Ashlyn Fleming also ranks 10th with a .367 hitting percentage and is 12th with 1.13 blocks per set, while junior Morgan O'Brien ranks seventh with a 0.38 service aces per set mark and sophomore Taylor Kuper ranks 13th with a 0.35 mark.
In Big Ten play, Quade is second with 0.63 aces per set and sixth with 4.00 kills per period. Brown owns the fourth-best assists per set ratio at 11.13 and Fleming is eighth with a .400 attack clip and tied for 11th with a 1.00 blocks per set mark.Â
ILLINI RANKED NO. 18 IN AVCA POLL
The Illinois volleyball team remained in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Top 25 Poll for the sixth-straight week, coming in at No. 18 in this week's rankings. The Illini opened the season with a No. 6 preseason ranking, before moving up one spot for a season-high ranking of No. 5 the following week.Â
Illinois is one of six Big Ten schools ranked the AVCA Poll, including No. 2 Nebraska. No. 5 Penn State, No. 7 Minnesota, No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 17 Purdue, while Michigan is also receiving votes. Along with their conference foes, the Illini have faced two other opponents in the top-25, including No. 8 Washington and No. 10 Marquette, with Colorado also receiving votes.
ILLINI CLOSING IN ON PROGRAM'S 1,000TH WIN
The Illinois volleyball program entered the 2019 season with an overall record of 989-558-7 (.639) in 45 seasons and with six wins so far in the 2019 campaign, the Illini are just five wins from the historic 1,000th victory in program history.
ROSTER RUNDOWN
The Illini return 10 members from the 2018 NCAA National Semifinal squad, including American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Jacqueline Quade and All-Big Ten Second-Team honoree Ashlyn Fleming, who join classmates Beth Prince and Caroline Welsh for their senior season in Champaign.Â
Juniors Megan Cooney, Morgan O'Brien, Kylie Bruder and Emily Hollowell, sophomore Taylor Kuper and redshirt-freshman Diana Brown complete the returning roster.Â
Joining the squad for 2019 are Auburn sophomore transfer Mica Allison, redshirt-freshman Bruna Vrankovic and freshmen Kennedy Collins, Rylee Hinton, Kyla Swanson, Ellie Holzman, Alyssa Eske and Madison Chi.Â
HEAD COACH CHRIS TAMAS IN THIRD SEASON AT THE HELM OF ILLINI VOLLEYBALL
Chris Tamas is in his third season as head coach of the Fighting Illini volleyball program in 2019 after being named to the position in February 2017. Tamas (pronounced Thomas) is the eighth head coach in Illinois history.
Tamas made an immediate impact on Illinois volleyball in his first two seasons at the helm of the program and currently owns an overall record of 61-20 (.753), including a 30-12 (.714) mark in the nation's toughest volleyball league, the Big Ten Conference.
Illinois experienced one of its most successful seasons ever in 2018 under Tamas, who was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Illini made the program's fourth-ever appearance in the NCAA National Semifinals as the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament – riding a 17-match win streak into the Final Four - and ended the season ranked No. 3 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll. The team registered a 32-4 overall record and finished in second place in the Big Ten Conference with a 17-3 mark, with the 32 victories ranking tied for fourth-most wins in school history.
ILLINI ADVANCE TO FOURTH-EVER NCAA FINAL FOUR IN HISTORIC 2018 SEASON
The Illini are coming off an historic 2018 season that saw the Orange & Blue make the program's fourth appearance in the NCAA National Semifinals after earning the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Illini ended the season with a 32-4 overall record – with the 32 wins ranking fourth-most in program history - and finished in second place in the Big Ten Conference with a 17-3 mark.
