Lovie Smith Press Conference Quotes

Opening statement…
"This week for us, yesterday I had a chance to be a part of kicking off homecoming activities us for here. The older you get the more special Homecoming becomes for you. So for us, just a little recap from last game. Didn't like the way we started. Of course you go into every game wanting to win the football game but if that doesn't happen then you have to find some things to build off of. And we're right at the halfway point of our season and as we look at our season I guess you could say on as we go forward you look to the last game. When you get down 28-0 you have some decisions to make and we decided that first off we are a lot better football team than that, but more importantly we are going to play a lot better than that. Defense had to get some stops, they did. And from there we had to score points. And to be able to score 25 unanswered points like that gives our team confidence going on. We played a top-16 team, this week we get a chance to play a top-6 team. We have a history with the University of Wisconsin, we know what they are going to bring to the table on both sides of the football. We had a few injuries from our last game, and as we get to practice tomorrow we will be able to know a lot better about our injury situation. Of course, Brandon Peters missed last week, and we will need all hands on deck this week."

On Matt Robinson's performance in his first start as an Illini…
"I think overall there's a lot you have like. I'm going to talk a lot about how he did in the third quarter after we got down 28-0. We needed good quarterback play to bring us back. Whenever you have takeaways that's not a good thing, and of course we need to clean that up. But he had to make a lot of good throws, he had to move the ball. So he did some good things, like our football team, but we didn't do enough."

On if there is a decision at quarterback when Brandon Peters returns…
"Brandon Peters is our starting quarterback. Our backup quarterback played well for parts of the last game, but when our starting quarterback is ready to go he will go. And not only of course Matt, we had a chance to get Isaiah Williams some plays as well. It's always good to get your first reps as much as anything."

On how the Illinois defense will combat Jonathan Taylor and Wisconsin's offense…
"You start with Taylor, arguably the best players in all of college football. He is an excellent runner between the tackles, he has size, he can hit you with power, he's faster than most people, he's on their track team. So you start off with that. And it seemed like Wisconsin, i mean they lost a ton of offensive linemen from their team last year, but it seems like there is another big guy that comes in. good scheme, it's a good challenge, and you have to be sound. First you need to like contact. We know what we're going to see. It's not going to be a finesse game this week, we need to put our big boy pads on and we plan on putting them on this week."
