NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – No. 12-ranked Fighting Illini men's golf closed play at The Macdonald Cup on Sunday posting a total score 15-under par to win its first tournament of the season. The Orange and Blue finished with a seven-stroke lead over the tournament field and were joined among the top three teams by Yale (-8) and Princeton (+7).
All seven Illini in the field finished among the top-25 individuals, paced by junior Bryan Baumgarten who closed play in a tie for second place. Playing as an individual, freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart also tied for second individually, closing the tournament with a 5-under par final round score to climb the individual leaderboard.
"It's good to get the first win of the season, head coach Mike Small said. "We've talked, this fall, about this team developing its own identity and personality, and this is a step in the right direction. Bryan Baumgarten had a solid round today; when the team has a lead in the tournament and a guy goes out and makes 16 pars and two birdies, that's a big statement. Adrien {Dumont de Chassart}, playing unattached, also had his first solid event as a collegiate player, and we're excited about how he will build on that in future."
Baumgarten posted a solid round on Sunday, as he played steady throughout the tournament. He shot a bogey-free 2-under par, recording two birdies on his back nine. He finished play 8-under par in total.
Dumont de Chassart was also strong on Sunday, closing play with a 65 on the day. He tallied four birdies in six holes on the front nine and added three more before the end of his round.
In the Illini lineup, junior Giovanni Tadiotto shot even par on Sunday, carding four birdies on the day. He tied for sixth individually with a total score 3-under par.
Junior Michael Feagles also finished among the top 10 individuals, posting a total score 2-under par to tie for ninth. He used three birdies to negate two bogeys in the middle of his round and close the day 1-over par.
Sophomore Brendan O'Reilly tied for 12thindividually with a final tally at even par. He shot 3-over par on Sunday. Freshman Luke Armbrust closed play in 22nd individually. He shot 6-over par for the tournament.
