Trnava, Slovakia - Illinois Wrestling will be represented at the Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia this week, as redshirt freshman Matt Wroblewski will be wrestling for Poland in the competition.
Wroblewski's parents, Adam and Agnes, moved to the U.S. from Poland, and Matt holds dual-citizenship. Coming to UI from Mount Prospect, Ill., and Prospect High School, Wroblewski went undefeated (35-0) in his senior season and won the IHSA Class 3A State Championship at 215 pounds in 2017. At Illinois, he made his debut at the MSU Open, and placed runner-up in the 197-pound division. Additionally, Wroblewski went 3-0 to win the Kaufman Brand Open.
The Junior World Championships is a yearly event that features the world's best wrestlers between the ages of 18 and 20 years old. Categories include Greco-Roman, Freestyle and Women's. This year's competition takes place Sept. 17-23. A recap of Wroblewski's participation at the Championships will be released at the conclusion of the competition.
