OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Fighting Illini men's golf closed the second round of play at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational on Saturday, posting a team score 6-over par. Two Illini currently sit among the top 10 individuals, as sophomore Brendan O'Reilly and junior Giovanni Tadiotto are tied for seventh and ninth, respectively. The Orange and Blue are 11-over par in total, tied for sixth as a team. Â
Oklahoma State sits in the top spot on the tournament with a total score 9-under par, while California (-1) and Alabama (+7) round out the top three.
"Different day, same story," head coach Mike Small said. "We played well most of the day, once again, but we didn't close. We are playing a lot of good golf, evidenced by the fact that we are leading the field in total birdies. That shows that our offense is very good, but the reason we are in sixth place is because of our defense: our inability to save shots around the green and put the ball in the fairway consistently. We saw a solid round from Brendan today, and as a coach, I'm looking forward to seeing him build on that momentum."
O'Reilly led the Illini on Saturday, posting a second-round tally of 3-under par. He started the day with three consecutive birdies and made the turn at 1-under par. He added another three birdies on the back nine, which negated a bogey on his final hole. O'Reilly heads into Sunday's final round with a total score at even par.
Tadiotto is 1-over par through two rounds of play. He shot 3-over par on Saturday and remains among the top 10 individuals. Tadiotto record four birdies on the back nine, which negated early bogeys in his round.
Juniors Bryan Baumgarten and Michael Feagles also closed the day at 3-over par. Baumgarten carded two birdies for the Illini, and is 4-over par through two rounds of play, while Feagles also added two birdies on Saturday. Feagles is 6-over par in total and tied for 40th.
Sophomore Varun Chopra shot 5-over par on Saturday for a total score 13-over par.
Playing as an individual, Illini freshman Tommy Kuhl shot 7-over par on Saturday and is currently tied for 46th. Freshmen Luke Armbrust and Adrien Dumont de Chassart each shot 8-over par in today's second round. Armbrust is 12-over par in total, while Dumont de Chassart is 19-over through two rounds.
