Illini to Watch
Devin Quinn // 100m and 200m
The reigning Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week ranks top-10 nationally in both events, leading the Big Ten in the 200m and trailing the 100m conference leader by one hundredth of a second. This weekend Arizona and Ohio State will offer Quinn ample competition in both events with Buckeyes Zack Bazile and Eric Harrison each ranking in the top-40 nationally and top-five in the Big Ten in the 100m, while Harrison ranks 17th in the 200m. Arizona features No. 26 Tyrell Johnson (10.41) in the 100m and No. 20 Maj Williams (20.86) in the 200m.
Nicole Choquette & Rebecca Craddock // 800m
Both Illini distance runners are coming off personal records in longer events at Stanford last weekend, Choquette in the 1500m (4:30.27) and Craddock in the 5K (16:30.90). Illini graduate senior Choquette will be running her primary event for the first time this outdoor season on Saturday, an event she's placed in three times indoors. Craddock, a freshman, will make her outdoor collegiate debut in the event after timing a 2:14.46 PR indoors back in January. Craddock will also contest the 1500m, also an outdoor debut, coming off an eighth-place finish at Big Ten indoors in the mile with a PR of 4:43.51 in prelims.
Jonathan Wells // 110m Hurdles and Long Jump
Ranking in the top three of the Big Ten in both events, Wells is off to a strong start to his outdoor season after redshirting indoors. Wells ranks second in the long jump and will have Big Ten leader Zack Bazile of Ohio State in the field on Saturday. While Wells' 23'7.75" (7.51m) jump is near his outdoor PR of 24'11" (7.59m), the redshirt junior marked 25'6" (7.77m) at USA Indoor Championships last month.
Though known primarily for his jumping ability, Wells' progress in the high hurdles has made him a scoring threat there as well with a 14.05 time last Saturday at Ole Miss, currently third in the Big Ten, to prove it.
Chisom Nwoko // 400m
The hot end to the indoor season continued for the Illini sophomore sprinter into the outdoor campaign, as Nwoko cut two seconds off her best 400m time from last year's outdoor season in her first outdoor race of 2018. The 53.59 time at Ole Miss not only set a big personal record, but also placed her 36th nationally in the event, and seventh on Illinois' all-time list. Ohio State features a trio of 400m sprints in the top-30 nationally, led by No. 6 Maggie Barrie (52.61).
Illini Notes
Last Time Out
Nine Illini events were victorious at the Ole Miss Classic, while a pair of Illini women's distance athletes set personal record times at the Stanford Invite. Sprinter Devin Quinn tied his personal best in the 100m (10.20) and set a new personal record in the 200m (20.45), both ranking top-10 in the country, while David Kendziera swept both hurdles races with top-10 nationally ranked times as well. On the women's side, Chisom Nwoko timed the eighth fastest 400m (53.59) in school history, while Rebecca Craddock ran the seventh best 5K in Illinois history while at the Stanford Invite.
Devin Quinn Named B1G Athlete of the Week
Illinois junior sprinter Devin Quinn was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, April 4, following top-10 nationally ranked times at the Ole Miss Classic. Quinn won three events on the day, setting the second fastest 100m time (10.20) in the country and the sixth fastest 200m (20.45). The 200m time leads the Big Ten, while the 100m trails the leader by 0.01 seconds. The weekly accolade is the first of Quinn's career.
Illini in the Rankings
11 Fighting Illini performances rank among the top-50 in the country through the opening month of the outdoor season, including four in the top-10. Both Devin Quinn and David Kendziera hold two top-10 times, as Kendziera ranks third in the 110m hurdles and seventh in the 400m hurdles and Quinn holds the No. 6 100m time and No. 10 100m mark. Jonathan Wells' 110m hurdles (27th), 4x100m relay (28th), Joe Haight's 200m (33rd) and Chisom Nwoko (36th) in the 400m lead the rest of the track events, while Cooper Jazo in the pole vault (36th), Jonathan Wells in the long jump (40th) and Matsen Dziedzic in the hammer throw (49th).
Not Your Average Joe
A walk-on to Coach Turk's program in the Spring of 2016, Joe Haight has taken the opportunity and ran with it, literally. Now a junior, Haight scored at Big Ten Championships for the first time in his career during this year's indoor season with big personal best times in the 400m. The Lake Forest, Illinois native bridged the success to the outdoor track with his first sub-21 second 200m race at Southern Illinois on March 24, clocking 20.95. Haight added to the success at Ole Miss with a 47.55 personal record in the 400m.
Double Threat: Kendziera Once Again Atop Both Hurdle Events
Named a preseason All-American in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles after earning First Team All-America honors at NCAA Championships last season, the Orange and Blue redshirt season staked claim to the third-fastest 110m hurdle time (13.46) and seventh-fastest 400m hurdle time (50.82) in NCAA Division I through the season's opening month. Both leading the Big Ten conference, Kendziera is looking to win his second intermediate hurdle conference title and his first in the high hurdles.
All Is Well(s): All-American Jonathan Wells Atop Big Ten Ranks
After the redshirt junior sat out the indoor season to even up his eligibility between indoor and outdoor, the Illini add four-time All-American Jonathan Wells back into the mix this spring. Also a 110m hurdler, Wells will be a postseason point-scoring threat in the high hurdles, long jump and high jump this season. At Ole Miss, Wells set the second best long jump in the Big Ten (24'7.75") and the third-best 110m hurdle time (14.05).
Chisom Nwoko Breaks Out
Setting the second fastest 400m indoor race in Illinois program history at Big Ten Indoor Championships, Nwoko etched her name into the outdoor all-time list in her season debut at Ole Miss. The sophomore sprinter clocked 53.59 to win the event, the seventh-fastest time in school history and 36th-fastest time in the country so far this season.
