CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 22/25 Illinois baseball team took a 2-0 lead to the sixth inning but could not hold on in a 4-2 loss Sunday at snowy Illinois Field. Iowa won the series 2-1.
Illinois (17-7, 4-2 Big Ten) stranded eight base runners in the final three innings and 12 for the game. The Illini scored their only two runs in the first inning on a Michael Massey RBI single and Doran Turchin RBI single.Â
Massey was the only Illini with multiple hits, including an RBI single in the first, to extended his hitting streak to nine games. Massey hit behind Spillane, one of the hottest hitters in the nation, who walked a career-high four times as Iowa pitched around the slugger all day. Spillane finished the series 6-for-9 with three homers, five RBIs and six runs scored.Â
Iowa's (16-9, 3-2 Big Ten) bottom two in the order - Lorenzo Elion and Mitchell Boe - went 4-for-8 with two RBIs to lead the Hawkeyes. Kyle Crowl added two of Iowa's eight singles.
Neither team produced an extra-base hit with the wind blowing straight in and temperatures dipping below 30 degrees. The snow started in the late innings and got heavier through the end of the game.
Cole McDonald (2-1) got the win for Iowa after throwing 6 1/3 innings while allowing two runs on five hits. Ryan Thompson (5-2) took the loss in relief of Ty Weber, who started and allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Illinois is back in action Wednesday at Illinois State. Next weekend Illinois travels to Maryland.
