URBANA, Ill.  – The No. 6 Fighting Illini women's tennis team defeated the Purdue Boilermakers, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center. The Illini are now 12-2 overall this season and 3-1 in Big Ten play.

Illinois clinched its third-straight doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Freshman Emilee Duong and junior Jaclyn Switkes blanked Purdue's Calkins and Babic to get the Illini started on court two. At the No. 1 position, freshman Sasha Belaya and junior Daniela Pedraza-Novak secured the point, 6-4.

Duong was first off the singles court with a 6-4, 6-2 win on five. Belaya blanked Calkins in a second set tiebreaker to earn the 6-3, 7-6(0) victory. Purdue got on the board with a three-set win on one, but Pedraza-Novak quickly clinched the match win for Illinois on court four. The Bogota, Colombia, native defeated Seira Shimizu 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.  

Up next, the Orange and Blue take a 10-day break from match play before returning to the courts in Hawaii. The Illini take on Rainbow Warriors on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 CT.

  • Pedraza-Novak clinched her first match for the Orange and Blue this season.
  • Sunday's 6-1 win over Purdue marked the first time UI has clinched a match at the No. 4 position this season.
