URBANA, Ill. – Fighting Illini freshman Mia Rabinowitz was named the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon. Rabinowitz is the first Illini freshman to win a Big Ten weekly award since Emily Wang on March 5, 2004.
Rabinowitz clinched Illinois's 4-2 win over No. 11 Texas on Friday night at the Atkins Tennis Center. The freshman defeated Texas's No. 32-ranked Petra Granic, 6-2, 7-6(5) on court three to seal the Illini victory. The singles win was the first over a nationally-ranked opponent for Rabinowitz. Friday marked the first time Illinois has defeated a Top-20 opponent since 2012.
The honor is the first for Rabinowitz and the Illini women's tennis team this season. Illinois will take on the Furman Paladins on Friday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 pm.
