URBANA, Ill.  – The No. 24 University of Illinois women's tennis team defeated the No. 22 Washington Huskies, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Illinois is off to the program's best start since 1982 with a 7-1 overall record.
The Illini grabbed the doubles point for the fourth-straight match on Sunday with freshmen Asuka Kawai and Mia Rabinowitz clinching the point, 6-3 on court three.
In singles play, freshman Sasha Belaya gave Illinois a 2-0 advantage with a dominating, 6-1, 6-1 win over Katarina Kopcalic at the No. 6 position. The Huskies answered by taking the next three matches on courts four, one and three.
Freshman Emilee Duong tied the match on court five after defeating Kenadi Hance, 6-2, 7-5. The match came down to a third-set tiebreaker on court two between junior Jaclyn Switkes and Washington's No. 36-ranked Vanessa Wong. Switkes took the tiebreaker, 7-4 to clinch Illinois's fourth-straight win and second victory over a Top-25 opponent.
Up next, Illinois will compete in the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Alabama next weekend.
