URBANA, Ill.  – The No. 24 Fighting Illini women's tennis team defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center. Illinois is now 6-1 overall this season and off to the program's best start since 1982.
In doubles play, freshman Sasha Belaya and junior Daniela Pedraza-Novak defeated Iowa's van Heuvelen and Crawford, 6-3 on court two. After dropping the doubles match on court three, the point came down to a tiebreaker on court one. Freshman Emilee Duong and junior Jaclyn Switkes topped No. 41-ranked Douglas and Long, 7-4, to clinch the point.
Belaya was first off the singles court with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Montana Crawford on court six. Simultaneously, Switkes gave Illinois a 3-0 advantage by defeating Zoe Douglas, 6-3, 6-0 on court two. Duong clinched the match for the Orange and Blue, 6-0, 6-4 on court five. The remaining singles matches played out with Illinois earning two more team points on courts one and four.
The Illini will complete their four-match home stand with a Top-25 matchup on Sunday with No. 22 Washington. First serve is set for 11 am at the Atkins Tennis Center.
